Kiba Active Task Chair

An Active Chair Promoting Movement and Improving Health

Kiba is an active task chair designed by Tommy Duong that promotes movement to strengthen the core, improve balance, and enhance flexibility. Inspired by the detrimental effects of sitting on health, Kiba aims to revolutionize the way we sit and improve our overall well-being.

Kiba is not just another chair; it is a solution to the sedentary lifestyle that has become the norm. With a unique angle seat, Kiba allows users to sit in a perching position, which is the least harmful solution to the lower back when seated. By activating the sit bone, the planar seat supports the upward drive of the spine, promoting better posture and reducing the risk of back pain.

One of the key benefits of sitting in the perching position is the increased body awareness it provides. Weight can be sensed through the feet, allowing users to have a higher level of consciousness about their posture and movement. This heightened awareness can lead to improved balance and flexibility over time.

Designed with simplicity and functionality in mind, Kiba is manufactured using cost-effective methods and offers modular customization options. The wood seat is made by bending layered Italian poplar, while the frame is constructed from bent steel tubes. The micro-perforated leather seat is easily attached to the wood seat using Velcro. With minimal parts and easy assembly, Kiba is designed to be accessible to a wide range of users.

Kiba's rocking design encourages users to stay active while sitting. By eliminating the chair back, Kiba promotes autonomous sitting, which strengthens the core and improves flexibility. The angle seat also allows for better blood circulation, preventing discomfort and fatigue during long periods of sitting.

The Kiba Active Task Chair was developed as a result of extensive research on the health implications of sitting and ergonomic solutions. By applying somatics and body-conscious design principles, Tommy Duong aimed to create a chair that not only provides comfort but also helps users become more aware of their sitting habits and improve their overall posture and health.

The Kiba Active Task Chair was created as a design project at San Jose State University and was completed in May 2014. Since then, it has gained recognition and was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2015. This prestigious award recognizes Kiba's outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence in design.

With its unique design, focus on movement, and commitment to improving health, the Kiba Active Task Chair is a testament to the power of design in enhancing our everyday lives.
